During its 30 years on the air, everyone from Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Simon Cowell to Elton John, Dolly Parton and Paul McCartney has played themselves on The Simpsons, a show which has become renowned for its celebrity guests.

Other A-list stars have preferred to make their guest stint a little more low-key, playing new characters who arrive in Springfield for just one or two episodes, with some even going as far as using pseudonyms rather than appearing under their own name.
