If you needed proof that the upcoming ‘Sabrina’ reboot was much darker than the much-loved 90s sitcom, then look no further than the first teaser trailer.
Netflix has given fans a first-look at ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, ahead of its debut next month – and it is chilling by name and nature.
The series will drop on the streaming service just before Halloween on 26 October, and will see everyone’s favourite teenage witch reimagined from the perky character played by Melissa Joan Hart.
The coming-of-age story is marked as tonally being in the same vein as ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, drawing on themes of horror and witchcraft.
But in a nod to the original series, which began with Sabrina discovering she was half-witch/half-mortal on her 16th birthday, the new trailer is themed around a similar celebration.
It then shows Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka), her family and the human world they inhabit under threat from evil forces, set against the backdrop of teenage life.
The new series has been made by those behind the Netflix hit ‘Riverdale’, although it has been confirmed it will have no connection to it.
Based on the original Archie Comics series first published in 1962, the show also features many other familiar characters.
Sabrina’s aunts Hilda and Zelda will also appear, as does their black cat Salem and her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle.
The OG Sabrina, Melissa Joan Hart, recently came out to say she had “no feelings” about the new series, but did admit she was glad bosses were taking a darker approach and “not just duplicating” it.
