Prue Leith has defended her views on Brexit following her appearance on ‘Question Time’ last week.
The ‘Great British Bake Off’ judge revealed she voted to leave the European Union and urged the country to “get behind our leader” on the BBC’s political debate show.
During her appearance, the 78-year-old was branded “callous”, “heartless” and “lacking in empathy” after she also made what many viewers saw as flippant remarks about homelessness.
Speaking at the 2018 TRIC Awards, the cook told Metro that people have got the wrong idea about her.
“Everyone thought I was a raging Tory after that but I’m not,” she said. “I only voted Conservative once and we lost!
“But I stand by what I said, I think we’re better out than in.”
Whilst on ‘Question Time’ she admitted she had “dithered” over how to vote in the referendum.
She said: “I ended up voting for Brexit but I dithered and dithered for ages because there were really good arguments on both sides, and really intelligent people on both sides, it’s such as pity we have everyone fighting.
’The Tories voted for Mrs May, they should show some loyalty, help the woman get on and make the damn deal.”
Her views on the UK’s housing crisis came in for widespread criticism when Labour MP Laura Pidcock, who was on the panel alongside Prue, was discussing how she believed the government was not doing enough to provide affordable or social housing.
When she then touched on the topic of homelessness, Prue told her to “stop it”.
“I’m not gonna stop while people are dying on the street,” Laura replied.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake, Laura. Stop it,” Prue responded.
As Laura continued discussing the topic, Prue appeared increasingly fed up, telling the MP: “We’ve got it. We agree with you. Let’s let a few other people speak.”
