Alexander Skarsgård’s Golden Globes win for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series was one of four gongs awarded to ‘Big Little Lies’ at Sunday night’s bash, but some people had a problem with his acceptance speech.
On the HBO series, the actor plays Perry, a man who who not only abuses his wife Celeste (Nicole Kidman), but is also a revealed to be a rapist.
But despite the fact that this year’s Globes were the first major Hollywood awards ceremony to take place since many of its female stars and workers spoke up about sexual misconduct within the industry, Alexander failed to even mention it.
He also failed to acknowledge his character’s abhorrent behavior, even though he attended the ceremony wearing a Time’s Up pin.

Instead, his speech began with giving a shout-out to his 8-year-old brother before paying tribute to his female cast mates on the show, including Nicole Kidman – referring to them all as “girls” at one point – before walking off stage.
Twitter was not impressed…
Alexander Skarsgard just won for playing a domestic abuser. Sam Rockwell won for playing a violent man. Neither of them felt compelled to make a statement against male violence in that moment. #GoldenGlobes #TimesUp

LRT: Alexander Skarsgard won an award for portraying a rapist/abuser, so an obvious opportunity to speak out. Nothing. #GoldenGlobes
…. and Skarsgard won for his role as a domestic abuser, and refused to talk about it in his acceptance speech. So, yeah. #TimesUp #GoldenGlobes
Shout out to Alexander Skarsgard for winning a Golden Globe for playing an abuser and not mentioning domestic violence in his speech at all

I wish Alexander Skarsgard would have spoken about #TIMESUP or sexual/domestic abuse in his speech. #goldenglobes
No one coached Alexander Skarsgard on using his platform to make a statement about abuse since the Emmys?
The 41-year-old star wasn’t the only male celeb spotted wearing a Time’s Up pin.
Daniel Kaluuya, Ewan McGregor, William H. Macy, Joseph Fiennes, Joe and Nick Jonas and Ryan Seacrest also showed their support, although Justin Timberlake came under fire for wearing his.
The Time’s Up initiative was announced last Monday, and is the result of several hundred actresses and female agents, writers, directors and entertainment executives coming together to fight sexual misconduct across the US.
It has no leadership and members include Ashley Judd, Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon.
