Christmas looks to have come early for Mariah Carey, as she could be about to reach number one in the UK with her classic festive hit All I Want For Christmas Is You for the first time ever. 

Despite being one of the best-selling songs of all time, the track has never actually reached the top spot in Britain since its release in 1994. 

However, that could be about to change this week, as early figures for this week suggest she’s on course to finally make it. 

As of Monday, Mariah was only 900 chart sales behind Ariana Grande’s Positions, which is currently number one in the midweek chart. 

This is partly due to a huge boost in streaming of Christmas songs, as Britons attempt to get into the festive spirit earlier than usual due to the stresses of 2020.

According to the Official Charts Company, year-to-date streams of Christmas songs are up nearly 44% on the same period in 2019.

However, Mariah fans will have to wait until Friday to see if she manages to clinch the number one, when the Official Chart is counted down at 4pm on Radio 1. 

In 1994, the year it was originally released, All I Want For Christmas Is You was kept off the top spot of the UK singles chart by East 17′s Stay Another Day.

Last year, it reached number one in the US Billboard chart for the first time ever. 

In 2017, The Economist revealed that the four-minute hit has earned Mariah more than $60 million (£46.6m) in royalties since its release.
