There was widespread outrage across the internet on Tuesday night, as the results of the Great British Bake Off semi final were revealed.
Hermine was sent home in a controversial decision following this week’s Patisserie Week challenges, and it’s fair to say fans were not happy.
The 39-year-old accountant from London had proved to be a fan favourite over the course of the series, and entered the semi final off the back of two consecutive Star Baker wins.
However, Hermine failed to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith during the Showstopper challenge, in which the four remaining bakers were tasked with making a cake comprising 25 mini-cubes.
After the three challenges were complete, it was Hermine and Laura who found themselves in the danger zone, after Laura also had a disaster with her cube cakes.
During the judges’ deliberations, host Noel Fielding appeared to fight for Hermine to stay in the competition, after Paul pointed out she should have done better in the challenges as she specialises in patisserie.
Referencing Laura’s tumultuous journey in the tent, Noel said: “How many times have we said Laura’s got to save herself, five times?”
Sadly, it was not enough to save Hermine from elimination, with the result causing uproar on Twitter…
Speaking after leaving the tent, Hermine said: “I believe everything has a reason. It was the right time for me.”
She also shared a video on her Instagram account thanking fans for their support.
“I feel immensely privileged and grateful to have been part of the 2020 series of The Great British Bake Off,” she said.
“I’ve had the opportunity to know you, and you to know me. I’ve read every single one of your messages of support and the love you had for me and I’m really grateful and enjoyed every moment of it. So I want to say thank you for your support.”
Peter, David and Laura will now battle it out in next Tuesday’s grand finale.
The result comes after Laura admitted she felt “embarrassed” to have got as far as she had on the Channel 4 show.
Speaking to Radio Times, she said: “I was never worried about getting to a certain point, I just wanted to do my best.
“If anything, I felt embarrassed at getting so far, as I didn’t feel like I deserved it.”
The Great British Bake Off final airs on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
