Remember that period a couple of years ago when you couldn’t move for people singing Baby Shark, for some reason or another?
Well, the *ahem* divisive song has just reached an unbelievable new accolade, becoming the most-watched clip in YouTube history.
On Monday, it was revealed that the version of the song performed by Pinkfong, a South Korean educational brand, has amassed a total of 7.04 billion views.
This means that – love it or hate it – Baby Shark has been watched more than any other video uploaded to YouTube, overtaking Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito music video, which previously held the record.
In a statement, Min Seok Kim – the CEO SmartStudy, Pinkfong’s parent company – said: “Without the love and support of fans around the world, Baby Shark’s new record would have been impossible.
“We’re very honored by this record and will continue to focus on delivering high-quality entertainment beyond the digital platforms.”
While Despacito is now at number two, Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You is at third place on YouTube’s most-watched videos list, after being played 5.05 billion times.
Other clips inside the top 10 include Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again (at fourth place, with 4.79 billion views), another children’s favourite Johny Johny Yes Papa (at sixth place, with 4.41 billion views) and Psy’s Gangnam Style (at eighth place on 3.84 billion views).
The popularity of Baby Shark has led to a merchandise line inspired by the song, which includes toys, clothing, bedding and even a breakfast cereal.
Baby Shark also charted at number six in the UK in early 2019, as well as reaching number 32 in the US.
Earlier this year, Pinkfong introduced a new version of the song teaching children how to properly wash their hands, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
