‘Don’t Tear The Pants Out Of It!’ These Are The Absolute Best Bits From The Coronavirus Briefings

“DON’T TEAR THE PANTS OUT OF IT!”

And so it was that the most important scientist in the UK eloquently cautioned the nation against rushing outside and breaking lockdown measures as they were being eased in May.

While the daily Downing Street press briefings were essentially a frequent reminder that the coronavirus pandemic was (and remains) terrible, there were at least a few moments that brought some much-needed light relief to the overwhelmingly horrible content.

Who could forget Dominic Raab inventing the word “preak”? Or Priti Patel going one further and creating the entirely new number of “three hundred thousand, and thirty four, nine hundred and seventy four thousand”?

Remarkable. And these are the designated adults in charge, don’t forget.

But an honourable mention also goes to the journalists posing the tough questions, many of whom couldn’t work a mute button and at least one who thought “oh, shit” was an acceptable way to greet the chancellor.

Alas, on Tuesday No.10 announced ministers would continue to hold briefings only when “significant announcements” are made.

It comes after Boris Johnson announced from July 4 a widespread easing of the Covid-19 lockdown that has been in place for three months.

Earlier this month, Downing Street cancelled weekend press conferences due to their low TV ratings.

We’ve compiled some of the most memorable moments in the video above.
