A 13-day-old baby with no known underlying health conditions has died of coronavirus, as the UK’s death toll increases by 135 over 24 hours.

Since the end of April, the government’s daily announcement has included people in care homes and the community, rather than just in hospital, who have died.

But only those who had tested positive for Covid-19 are included, meaning anyone who died with a suspected case won’t be recorded.

The figures cover the period up to 5pm on Wednesday, taking the total death toll to 42,288.

It comes after the number of people who have died in hospitals across the UK, as well as care homes in Wales, after contracting the virus rose by 69 in 24 hours.

That increase consisted of 62 in England, two in Scotland and five in Wales. Northern Ireland reported zero deaths in the previous 24 hour period.

NHS England confirmed that patients who died were aged between 13 days and 96 years old. Three patients, including the baby, were not known to have any underlying health conditions.

The latest figures were published on Thursday.

The data on deaths published by NHS England also accounts for 25 people who had previously been included in error.

Here’s a quick primer on what all the different numbers mean and how to understand them.

Meanwhile, as of 9am on Thursday, there have been 7,259,555 tests carried out. The number of people tested will be significantly lower than this as many people are tested more than once.

To date, 300,469 have tested positive for Covid-19.
