The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus has risen by 205 in 24 hours.

The increase consists of 178 in England, 10 in Scotland, 5 in Northern Ireland and 12 in Wales.

Fatalities in England were aged between 32 and 98, and a dozen had no underlying health conditions, NHS England said.

Of the 178, 33 occurred on May 9; 88 on May 8 and 27 on May 7.

The figures also show 24 of the new deaths took place between May 1 and May 6, four took place in April, while the remaining two deaths occurred in March, with the earliest new death taking place on March 17.

NHS England releases updated figures each day showing the dates of every coronavirus-related death in hospitals in England, often including previously uncounted deaths that took place several days or even weeks ago. This is because of the time it takes for deaths to be confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19, for post-mortem examinations to be processed and for data from the tests to be validated.

The figures published today by NHS England show April 8 continues to have the highest number for the most hospital deaths occurring on a single day, with a current total of 884.

UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) show that as of 9am on Sunday, there have been 1,821,280 tests carried out, with 219,183 positive results.

As of 5pm on May 9, the department said, the total number of deaths in all settings had reached 31,855.Here’s a quick primer on what all the different numbers mean and how to understand them.
