The number of people who have died in hospitals in England, Scotland and Wales after contracting coronavirus has risen by 252 in 24 hours.

The increase consists of 207 in England, 36 in Scotland and 9 in Wales. Numbers for Northern Ireland are yet to be released. 

UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) are yet to be published, so the data are taken from each nation’s individual reporting.

It brings the working total to 31,493.

But the government tally, when it is released later today, will be significantly higher as it includes deaths in care homes and the community. Here’s a quick primer on what all the different numbers mean and how to understand them.

In England, patients were aged between 37 and 100 years old.  Nineteen of the 207 patients (aged between 60 and 95 years old) had no known underlying health condition.
