Coronavirus: Ten New Deaths In England

More than 1,000 people are now confirmed to have contracted the virus.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK has jumped to 1,140 – an increase of 342 from Friday’s figure of 798.

The news came just minutes after NHS England revealed that there had been ten new deaths in England, bringing the UK total to 21.

More than 36,000 people have now been tested for the virus.

NHS England has issued statements on behalf of nine hospital trusts regarding the 10 new patients who have died and had tested positive for Covid-19.

Not all trusts released details about their patients, but the patients who died were generally elderly and had underlying health conditions.

The UK’s chief medical officer, professor Chris Whitty, said all of the latest to die were patients in “at-risk” groups.

The reported deaths were from across England, including Buckinghamshire, Leicester, London, and Chester.

Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, said: “I am sorry to confirm 10 further patients who have tested positive for Covid-19 in England have died.

“All 10 individuals were in the at risk groups. I understand this increase in the number of deaths linked to Covid-19 will be a cause for concern for many.

“The public should know every measure we are taking is seeking to save lives and protect the most vulnerable.

“Every single one of us has a role to play in achieving this. If you have a new continuous cough or high temperature, please stay at home for seven days.

“I also encourage everyone to be washing their hands for 20 seconds regularly.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the families and friends who have received this difficult news. I ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”
