It’s Official: This Is The Wettest February On Record

Tewkesbury Abbey, at the confluence of the Rivers Severn and Avon, is surrounded by flood waters on February 27.

February 2020 is officially the wettest February on record, the Met Office have confirmed.

Latest rainfall data, taken at 9am on Saturday, reveals that UK average of 202.1mm has fallen – smashing the previous record of 193.4mm, recorded in 1990.

The news is not likely to come as a surprise to much of the country, which has been battered by heavy downpours across four consecutive weekends, and is currently in the midst of its third named storm – Jorge – in a month.

With multiple rivers breaking their highest-ever levels, some communities have been left almost perpetually underwater as the floodwater rises.

There are currently 86 flood warnings in place, with 216 “be prepared” flood alerts also issued by the environment agency.

On Saturday morning South Wales Police issued a “critical alert” following a night of extreme rainfall.

There are four Met Office weather warnings currently in place, all of which are set to remain for the rest of the weekend.
