Lewis Capaldi’s Brit Awards Speech Referenced Love Island And We Loved It

After a night of scene-stealing moments, Lewis Capaldi truly saved his best till last as he collected Best British Single during the Brit Awards on Tuesday night.

Having already put on a fantastic show on the red carpet, delivered a stand-out performance and forced Brits producers to think fast when he dropped the F-bomb during his first acceptance speech, Lewis had the crowd howling after collecting his second award.

Referring to his number one hit, Someone You Loved, he explained: “Contrary to popular belief, you might think this song is about my ex-girlfriend that you can now see every night on Love Island.”

As the crowd cheered at the mention of his ex, Paige Turley, Lewis continued: “[The song] is actually about my grandmother, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago… and hopefully ITV don’t contact her to go on any dating reality shows.”

Lewis went on to thank his family and team, before adding: “And thanks to my grandmother for… dying?!”

He was also seen drinking from a bottle of the particularly strong Scottish beer Buckfast on stage.

The chart-topping singer previously said of his ex’s appearance on Love Island: “She never told me she was going on it. It would have been a nice heads up! But, I mean, fair play, good luck to her.

“The prize is £50,000, and I’ll be like ’Well, listen, they asked you to go on it, right? I’m not saying I’m the reason but also … slide me two grand.”

Paige Turley

Paige is one of 12 stars currently still in the Love Island villa, where she’s been coupled up with Finn Tapp since he joined the show on day five.

The pair are currently among the favourites to win the show, alongside Siânnise Fudge and Luke Trotman.
