Oscars 2020: Cats’ James Corden And Rebel Wilson Were The Purr-fect Picks To Present Best Visual Effects

The conversation around this year’s Oscars has revolved around as much around the films that weren’t nominated as the ones that were, with many film fans complaining that films like Hustlers, The Farewell and Us weren’t given the recognition they deserved by the Film Academy in 2020.

Still, there’s one film that pretty much no one was surprised to see missing from this year’s nominees, and that’s Cats.

From the minute the first trailer for Cats debuted last summer, it became immediately apparent that we were in for something far from cinematic greatness, with the finished product being slammed by critics and viewers alike.

During Sunday night’s live Oscars broadcast, two of the film’s stars James Corden and Rebel Wilson poked fun at the backlash, arriving on stage to present an award dressed as their feline alter-egos.

And even more perfectly, the award they were presenting was for special effects.

“As cast members of the motion picture Cats,” James began, before Rebel continued: “Nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects.”

What more is there to say than that, right?

However, although they left it there, they did spend a few seconds batting the microphone in front of them like actual cats, which we’re sure really made the awards show’s sound editors’ night.

Shortly after Cats’ release, James admitted that he was yet to actually watch the film, but noted that he had heard it was “terrible”.

Rebel also poked at the backlash – among many other things – during her much-celebrated speech at the Baftas earlier this month.
