Some of Hollywood’s biggest names have paid their respects to Kirk Douglas following the legendary actor’s death.
He was best known for films including Spartacus and Ace In The Hole, and his explosive acting style and masculine persona established him as a leading man throughout the 1950s.
His son, actor Michael Douglas, confirmed his father had died on Wednesday night.
“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” Michael’s statement said.
“To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.”
Michael’s wife, Catherine Zeta Jones led the tributes to her “darling” father-in-law on Instagram.
“To my darling Kirk,” the Chicago actress wrote. “I shall love you for the rest of my life. I miss you already. Sleep tight…”
Elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences led the tributes, tweeting a picture of the actor from his best-known film Spartacus alongside his quote: “I wanted to be an actor ever since I was a kid in the second grade. I did a play, and my mother made a black apron, and I played a shoemaker. After the performance, [my father] gave me my first Oscar: an ice cream cone.”
They followed up with the message: “Goodbye to a Hollywood legend.”
