Boris Johnson has been warned by the new European Commission president it will be “impossible” for the UK and EU to strike a comprehensive new trade deal by the end of the year.

In a speech in London on Wednesday, Ursula von der Leyen said the tight negotiating timetable would force the EU to “prioritise” unless there was an extension beyond 2020.
