Earlier this week, Friends fans’ minds were blown when it was revealed that if they began watching the The One With The Cake at 11.48pm on New Year’s Eve, they would see the new decade with Chandler saying “Hi Emma, it’s the year 2020”.
Since then, the gag has taken on a life of its own on social media, as people struggle to believe it is 17 years on from when Emma would not wake from her nap.
You may well remember that Monica and Chandler recorded an 18th birthday message for Ross and Rachel’s daughter back in the fourth episode of the tenth series.
The pair were furious at the fact Emma was not awake during her first birthday party as they were due to set off on a weekend away, but Rachel would not let them leave.
In the message, an annoyed Chandler said: “Hi, Emma. It’s the year 2020. Are you still enjoying your nap?”
Monica continued: “We’re Aunt Monica and Uncle Chandler, by the way – you may not recognise us because we haven’t spoken to your parents in 17 years.”
Chandler went on: “We used to be married but then we missed a weekend away together and things kind of unravelled… Because of you!”
Fast-forward 17 years, and the young actor who played baby Emma on the hit sitcom has brilliantly responded to the scene with a gag Chandler would be proud of.
In a mocked-up photo of her in Central Perk on Instagram, Noelle Sheldon, who shared the role with her twin sister Cali, wrote: “Just woke up from the best nap of all time, happy 2020!! (ft. my poorly done photoshop) Hope everyone has an excellent year full of family, friends, and laughter!!”
Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel, recently suggested that she and her former co-stars were working together on a new project, with reports claiming it would be an unscripted one-off reunion special.
The cast of Friends have always maintained that they wouldn’t want to revisit the classic sitcom characters, including Lisa Kudrow, who recently branded the idea “sad”.
