I’m A Celebrity 2019 Line-Up: Who Is Andrew Maxwell, The Irish Comedian?

The line-up for this year’s I’m A Celebrity has been revealed, and we have to say that ITV has done a pretty good job of casting a wide net this year.

But while you will have heard of stars like Ian Wright, Caitlyn Jenner and Kate Garraway, a couple of the celebrities taking part might not be quite so familiar.

If you haven’t tuned into X Factor for the last couple of years, the chances are that Rak-Su singer Myles Stephenson will have passed you by, while Adele Roberts might also draw a blank if you don’t regularly tune into BBC Radio 1.

This brings us nicely to comedian Andrew Maxwell.

This year's I'm A Celebrity contestants

Interestingly, the Irish comic was absent from the I’m A Celebrity line-up that “leaked” days before the official one, and hadn’t been rumoured for the show prior to landing Down Under, so his name might come as a surprise to certain viewers.

For those not familiar with Andrew, here’s a little bit more about him…

He’s best known for his work as a stand-up comedian

Andrew did his first gig at a local comedy club when he was still a teenager, and within a couple of years he was already gigging in and around Ireland and the UK. He’s gone on to make appearances on shows like Mock The Week and Drunk History, and has released three live stand-up specials, the most recent of which came out in 2010.

In 2004, he also won the Channel 4 show Kings Of Comedy, which pitted up-and-coming comics against more seasoned performer.

He’s been the warm-up man for a number of British favourites

In the early years of his career, Andrew served as the warm-up comedian for TV shows like Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, the short-lived Johnny Vaughan Tonight and They Think It’s All Over.

You might remember him from one very memorable episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks

If you know you’ve seen Andrew’s face before but can’t quite place where, we think we have you covered.

Andrew was one of the guest panellists during Amy Winehouse’s infamous episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks, alongside daytime presenter Penny Smith and The Automatic’s Alex Pennie.

During the episode, Amy was displeased with the “disrespectful” way that Andrew spoke to one of the guests during the show’s Identity Parade segment.

I’m A Celebrity isn’t his first foray into reality television

In fact, Andrew was a contestant on the Irish reality show Celebrity Bainisteoir in 2010, which sees a host of stars becoming the managers of intermediate-level Gaelic football teams. Other celebs to have taken part over the years include Calum Best, Paddy Doherty and X Factor’s Mary Byrne.

Andrew is also the narrator of Ex On The Beach

Reality TV devotees might well recognise Andrew’s voice if nothing else, as he also provides the narration on the outrageous MTV reality show Ex On The Beach. He has been with the show since its first series in 2014, and has remained its narrator ever since, including on its 11th series which will debut next year.

I’m A Celebrity launches on Sunday 17 November at 9pm on ITV.
