If you’re anything like us, this week you’ll have been completely gripped by the Coleen Rooney v Rebekah Vardy saga.
And while Coleen has since been hailed as the greatest detective since Columbo thanks to her Instagram sting operation, The Circle offered up a rival sleuth on Thursday night.
Now, for those not familiar with the Channel 4 show, it sees individuals living in isolated flats, and only interacting with one another via a purpose-built social media platform called The Circle.
Because they never meet face to face, they can effectively catfish the competition in order to be voted the most popular and win £100,000.
Earlier this week, a young woman called Busayo entered The Circle, posing as a 24-year-old man called Josh.
The existing players have had their suspicions about “Josh”, but until now, haven’t had any proof that he is a catfish.
However, on Thursday’s show, a cake decorating challenge proved to be Josh’s undoing.
After pictures of all the players’ cakes were shared to The Circle, Beth – who is currently posing as a 62-year-old woman called “Joyce” along with fellow player Jack – noticed that “Josh’s” cake had nail marks in the icing.
From this, Beth deduced that this meant the player had long fingernails – something not usually associated with a 24-year-old man.
With her catfish senses a-tingling, she and Jack then decided to confront “Josh” about the markings in a way that would not arouse his suspicions.
After “Josh” claimed they were “accidental markings”, Beth and Jack tested him about football in the hope of tripping him up further.
In their chat, “Josh” revealed his favourite team was Arsenal, with Jack then saying “Joyce” would love to go to a game at Highbury Stadium. However, Arsenal no longer play there, having moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2006 – something any Arsenal fan worth their salt would know.
However, Busayo did not spot the deliberate mistake in “Joyce’s” message and replied about going to a game at Highbury.
Beth and Jack were left gobsmacked at having uncovered the fact Josh is not who he says he is.
The episode ended with Beth concluding they had to use this information to their advantage and share it with the other players – but who will they tell?
The pair’s catfish-hunting skills left fans on Twitter mightily impressed – especially as they themselves had been struggling to convincingly pull off being “Joyce”.
The Circle continues on Friday night at 10pm on Channel 4.
