Travellers flying into and from Birmingham Airport became concerned on Sunday afternoon after delays in disembarking aeroplanes amid reports of evacuation due to a suspicious package.
Passengers took to social media to outline their worries and confusion and criticised the airport for the lack of information and communication.
One traveller Joel Carr who landed at Birmingham Airport told HuffPost UK: “We landed and were told there is no one to take us off the plane as part of the airport has been evacuated due to a suspicious package.”
He added they were on the aeroplane for 30 minutes before being allowed off.
West Midlands Police have confirmed Birmingham Airport was evacuated on Sunday afternoon due to suspicious items spotted in some luggage.
However, they said the items were later discovered to be of no threat as they were replica firearms.
A spokesman from West Midlands Police told HuffPost UK. “Terminal 2 of Birmingham Airport was evacuated briefly this afternoon following concerns for items found in checked in luggage.
“The items were found to be replica firearms bought at an antiques fair and posed no threat to travellers.
“We thank everyone for their patience while the incident was resolved.”
