Bruce Lee’s daughter has hit back at film director Quentin Tarantino over the depiction of her dad in the new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Set in Hollywood in the late 1960s, Tarantino’s new film depicts several key figures from the entertainment industry at that time, including actor Steve McQueen, director Roman Polanski and singer Mama Cass.
Among these is action star Bruce Lee, played in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood by Mike Moh, although some – including members of the late action star’s family – have suggested that his portrayal is not exactly favourable, as he comes across as overly cocky and arrogant.
While Tarantino recently defended this, insisting that Bruce Lee was “kind of an arrogant guy” according to the biographies he’d read while doing research for the film, Shannon Lee has spoken out once again, urging the director to “shut up” on the matter.
“He could shut up about it. That would be really nice,” Shannon told Variety.
“Or he could apologise or he could say, ‘I don’t really know what Bruce Lee was like. I just wrote it for my movie. But that shouldn’t be taken as how he really was’.”
She added: “He can portray Bruce Lee however he wanted to, and he did. But it’s a little disingenuous for him to say, ‘Well this is how he was, but this is a fictional movie, so don’t worry too much about it’.”
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood boasts an all-star cast led by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, while Margot Robbie stars as Sharon Tate, who was killed in 1969 by members of the “Manson Family”.
The film is out in UK cinemas now.
