Ah, summer. A time for tinnies in the park, cranking up your “sunny day” playlist (much to the annoyance of anyone around who isn’t a fan of Katrina And The Waves and the Beach Boys) and slathering aftersun on whatever part of yourself you forgot to apply sun-cream to.
What it’s not is a time for getting excited about any upcoming Christmas films – or, at least, that’s usually the case.
However, given the horrific weather we’ve been cursed with this August, we actually found ourselves feeling a little bit relieved when the trailer for Last Christmas was released on Wednesday morning, mainly because it’s nice to have something to actually look forward to.
As the title suggests, the upcoming Christmas film will incorporate the music of George Michael, with the title track featuring in the trailer, as well as Freedom 90.
Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke stars as Kate in the new romantic comedy, a down-on-her-luck young woman who works in a Christmas shop, but finds her luck might be changing when she meets the mysterious and saintly Tom, played by Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians fame.
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, the film co-stars Emma Thompson, who also wrote it, and was directed by Paul Feig, who previously helmed Bridesmaids, Spy and A Simple Favor.
And believe us, we weren’t the only ones getting in the festive spirit after watching the Last Christmas trailer…
As well as the aforementioned cast members, also seen in the trailer are Michelle Yeoh of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Rebecca Root, who was previously the lead in the BBC sitcom Boy Meets Girl.
Paul Feig recently told BBC News that Last Christmas will feature an unheard George Michael song, revealing: “He was putting together his new album when he passed.
“And one of our tracks is one of those songs, and it’s just an absolutely amazing song that I’m so excited the world is going to get to hear now.”
Last Christmas will be released in UK cinemas on 15 November.
