The Top Gun: Maverick Trailer Debuted While Everyone Was Too Busy Talking About Cats

While everyone was busy paw-ing over the new Cats trailer, the first promo for Top Gun’s sequel went by almost unnoticed.

The trailer for Top Gun: Maverick debuted late on Thursday night, which features Tom Cruise reprising his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

The action sequel – set to be released 34 years after the 1986 original – sees Maverick as a flight instructor at the Top Gun school, where he guides the son of Goose from the original film to be the pilot his father was.

The two-minute clip opens with Ed Harris’ character, a high-ranking military official, telling Maverick he is a “dinosaur” in the modern world of aviation.

But of course, there’s also a special spot for his Maverick’s famous bomber jacket and aviator sunglasses.

Tom Cruise is not the only original Top Gun star reprising his role for the sequel, as Val Kilmer will be back as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

It will also star Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell, while Miles Teller plays Goose’s son.

During a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic Con, Tom revealed he had always felt like he had to follow up the original film for the fans.

The 57-year-old actor said: “I was always asked ‘When are you going to do another one?’ Well, you’ve been very patient with me. I felt like it was my responsibility to really deliver for you.”
