The confirmed death of a man from ebola in the city of Goma, in the DRC, has lead the World Health Organisation to declare a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” (PHEIC). Goma has almost two million residents and borders Rwanda, acting as a gateway to the rest of DRC and the world. While emergency responses have been implemented, the WHO leader urged the international community to not restrict travel or trade with the region, saying “closing borders could have disastrous consequences for the lives and livelihoods of the people who cross the border every day for trade, education or to visit relatives.”
