Brexit Party Lifts Ban On Press Access For Channel 4 News

The Brexit Party has agreed to lift a ban on Channel 4 news attending events, it has been announced.

The decision follows a meeting between the party’s chairman and the broadcaster on Wednesday morning.

The six-week ban was reportedly triggered after the broadcaster aired an investigation into Farage last week, revealing he had been bankrolled by millionaire businessman and Leave.EU co-founder Aaron Banks to the tune of £450,000.

The Brexit Party, however, had claimed it was blacklisted after reporters “repeatedly lied” to gain access to a secure zone at a recent rally.

Channel 4 News has denied this accusation and said its journalists had been taken to the area by the pro-Brexit campaign Leave Means Leave.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Brexit Party said: “Today Richard Tice, chairman of the Brexit Party, met senior executives at Channel 4 in an attempt to resolve an ongoing dispute over the behaviour of a Channel 4 news and camera crew at the rally in Parliament Square on 29 March.

“Having secured unauthorised access to a secure zone, the Channel 4 team repeatedly lied, falsely claiming that they had been invited in. When challenged by Mr Tice and asked to leave, they repeatedly refused.

The statement went on to claim that Channel 4 has “accepted that there are legitimate security concerns”, adding that the broadcaster had “given the necessary reassurance that there will be no repeat of such behaviour”.

However Channel 4 news has refuted this once again in a statement, saying: “We would like set the record straight and be clear that we do not accept the assertion that our team ‘repeatedly lied’.

“Our team were escorted into a secure area by a Leave Means Leave press officer.

“We are pleased that this matter has now reached a conclusion, six weeks after an incident we were unaware of and five days after our Channel 4 News investigation into Nigel Farage.”

Channel 4 news also added Tice had agreed to appear on the programme for an interview on Wednesday night.

The channel’s investigation, which aired last Thursday, revealed that Banks funded Farage in the year following the EU referendum.

The businessman was also found to have funded a multi-million pound Chelsea flat through one of his companies, a £30,000 Land Rover Discovery plus £20,000 driver, and gifts including furniture, council tax and bills, all for Farage.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds were also splashed on promoting Farage to American audiences.

Responding to the investigation, Farage labelled the broadcaster “political activists”, adding that the organisation had “lost respect for Channel 4 News”.

Banks is currently being investigated by the National Crime Agency over the source of his funding for the Leave.EU campaign.

Farage has previously denied that Banks made any donations to the Brexit Party.
