Theresa May Sand Sculpture ‘Beheaded’ As Artist Calls For Brexit To Be Cancelled

A sand sculpture featuring Prime Minister Theresa May cutting off her own head with a guillotine as American President Donald Trump looks on, has been welcomed as “thought-provoking” and “welcome” by the council hosting the artistic event.

Politically-themed sculptures feature heavily at the event in Weston-super-mare, which is themed as a dystopian look at topical events entitled ‘What if?’

Another includes a sandy blue whale surrounded by plastic rubbish to represent climate change and pollution, while a third is of an obese mermaid holding fast food items.

Donald Trump also features in the display

Artist Johannes Hogebrink told Somerset Live that as Britain prepares to leave the EU, “to cut off England from Europe is to cut off her head.”

He added: “May’s appearance in my piece is most tragic, she was never behind Brexit in the first place and she’s clearly sacrificing herself over this entire deal.

“I say, show our strength. Cancel Brexit and shout unity.”

He later posted a picture of himself at the airport, quipping: “Escaping the country while my Brexit sculpture is causing a shit storm.”

A spokesman for North Somerset Council told HuffPost UK: “Art reflects issues that are important to the world around us. Often these are portrayed in a controversial way.

“Weston is no stranger to thought-provoking art.  Banksy, local street artist JPS, John D’Oh and Wormwood Rocks have all chosen the town to display their powerful messages. The town is gaining a growing reputation for showcasing art in many formats and we welcome this.”
