Piers Morgan was never going to react well to Good Morning Britain failing to triumph at Sunday night’s TV Baftas, so it should come as little surprise he unleashed a tirade of abuse after losing out on a gong.
The presenter branded the BBC “churlish, pathetic and spineless” after they decided not to air the category in which GMB was nominated.
The ITV breakfast show received two nods in the News Coverage category – one for their interview with Meghan Markle’s father Thomas, and another for a report on knife crime.
However, due to time constraints, the BBC opted to show the category in a short montage at the end of Sunday night’s show, where Channel 4 News were seen collecting the award for their Cambridge Analytica Uncovered report.
Riled at being airbrushed out of the televised ceremony, Piers raged on Monday morning’s GMB: “You wouldn’t have known GMB got nominated. We never got mentioned during the two-hour, incredibly boring, show.
“If you sat through that and are still alive good luck to you. How they get through it, those luvvies, I have no idea.”
He continued: “It’s a travesty.
“We were up for half the awards. Good Morning Britain was the first ever breakfast show to be nominated for that coveted award. But it didn’t make the main show.
“Churlish, pathetic and spineless by the BBC. I’m on to you.
“Shame on the BBC.”
He added: “You’ve got to explain yourselves. Just because the rival BBC breakfast show wasn’t nominated. We got half of the news coverage nominations.
“They just airbrushed it out of the whole thing. Like it didn’t happen.”
Piers later followed up his rant on Twitter: “So the BBC didn’t even mention on last night’s BAFTA TV awards that @GMB received two nominations for Best News Coverage. They literally airbrushed us out of the televised show to protect their own @BBCBreakfast which didn’t get nominated. How pathetic is that?”
While the News Coverage award did not feature in full during the as-live broadcast, the moment is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
Piers was in attendance at Sunday night’s ceremony with co-host Susanna Reid and the rest of the GMB team.
And while he was obviously still smarting about his loss, he did pay tribute to the on-air gang.
“We may not have won a BAFTA but we’re definitely the hottest team in British TV,” he wrote.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
