Davina McCall has revealed that she took drugs with her own mother in her younger years.
The Long Lost Family host has always spoken candidly about her past battle with substance issues, which developed into an addiction to heroin when she was in her 20s.
In a new interview Davina – who grew up living with her paternal grandparents in Surrey – has revealed that when she stayed with her mother Florence Kock in France during her holidays, there were “no boundaries”.
Speaking in the one-off magazine This Is Davina, she recalled “wearing make-up, short skirts, high heels at 13, drinking”, adding: “Eventually, I even took drugs with her.
“I don’t blame her at all for my addiction, but it was screwed up . . . not a normal mother-child relationship.
“I was just a kid and… I thought she was cool because my granny, Pippy, and my dad never let me do any of that in England. I realised years later it was because they were normal, responsible adults.”
Florence died in 2008 and Davina – who was estranged from her mother at the time of her death – chose not to attend her funeral.
The two had a rocky relationship, which culminated in a falling out when Florence sold a story to the press about Davina attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting shortly before her wedding.
Davina spoke last year about how she speaks to her three children about her past issues with drug addiction, revealing: “I had to be brutally honest [with my kids] quite early on when I thought other kids might talk to them about it… they grew up with ‘Mummy’s going to a meeting’ – they just didn’t know it was a Narcotics Anonymous meeting.”
This Is Davina is on sale now.
